Natalie Baldassarre, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, disputes the notion that the Pfizer contract is worse for taxpayers than the others. "The government, however, is giving away the store - meeting critical short-term goals but ignoring long-term serious costs." "The potential for a vaccine like this is nothing short of miraculous," Robin Feldman, a professor at the University of California Hastings College of the Law, who focuses on the pharmaceutical industry and drug policy, wrote in an email to NPR. Pfizer didn't respond to repeated requests for comment for this story. It may also set a dangerous precedent for future government contracts, they say. It excludes almost all intellectual property rights, forgoing leverage to use if the company engages in price gouging down the road. Meanwhile, the Pfizer contract has the narrowest protections for taxpayers of any Operation Warp Speed contract released so far, drug policy and intellectual property experts tell NPR. Shots - Health News Pfizer Says Experimental COVID-19 Vaccine Is More Than 90% Effective The other Operation Warp Speed agreements pay for vaccines regardless of FDA approval or authorization. The government also has the option to buy up to 500 million more doses. That nearly $2 billion contract will pay for 100 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine at a price of $19.50 per dose if the vaccine is OK'd by the Food and Drug Administration. The company announced that it submitted its request for emergency use authorization on Friday. They announced results of final efficacy analysis last Wednesday, revealing that the vaccine is 95% effective. Pfizer is working on the vaccine with BioNTech, a German company. Although Pfizer didn't receive government funding this spring toward research and development of the vaccine, it nevertheless received one of the largest Operation Warp Speed supply contracts to date on July 21. The drugmaker has downplayed its involvement in Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administration's more than $10 billion program to make a coronavirus vaccine available in record time. When the Department of Health and Human Services released Pfizer's $1.95 billion coronavirus vaccine contract with Operation Warp Speed last Wednesday, the agreement revealed that the Trump administration didn't include government rights to intellectual property typically found in federal contracts. Refrigerators store Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine at a company facility in Kalamazoo, Mich.

They’re supposed to last for 1500 loads! I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. I just got these awesome laundry balls that I’m now using instead of detergent. If your laundry room (or laundry closet) is small, I strongly recommend stacking! You can see the rest of this ultra-efficient room here. Stacking the washer and dryer can save a TON of space! In our small laundry room, it made room for an Ikea-hacked cabinet that stores laundry detergent and cleaning supplies, sorts the dirty laundry, and even has a spot for laundry baskets! If you want to pin any of their photos, please go to their sites to do it. Several of my blogger friends have graciously allowed me to use their photos. But we will absolutely take cute too if we can get it! Since every laundry space is unique, I went on a hunt for the most innovative and practical, and budget-friendly laundry room ideas I could find to share with you today.įunction is king, and cute comes second. We maximized the space, and it has been life-changing! You can check out our small laundry room makeover here. So we spent a weekend and about $300 on a mini-renovation. It was small, ugly, and really didn’t use the space well.

These are shopworkers and people from Colchester, captured and converted by the simple mechanics of a Cyber-ship, barely reawakened by some inept Council electricians. These are not, right now, the galaxy-crushers of legend. Yes, there’s a certain naffness to the Cybermen when they appear, but that’s almost the point of them in this story. It’s all joyously rich Eleventh Doctoring, and it stands up to much more rewatching than you might imagine. He talks to Stormageddon about how everything is still ahead for the child, and delivering a little Time Lord magic to show him the stars, just because he’s there, and he can, and it brings tears to your eyes. He reflects on how selfish he has always been (all the way back to his escape from Gallifrey, that is), uprooting people from their lives, dancing them round the universe just because he needed them, and then letting them go, and you want to give him a hug. In Closing Time, we see the Eleventh Doctor in a much more sombre, reflective mood than usual, and Smith absolutely knocks those out of the park, too. Watched again after several years, Closing Time re-impresses on you just how much commitment Matt Smith put into being his very specific Doctor, with every scene, every moment containing at least a little something that enhances the quality and depth of the characterisation. And his positively ‘Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes’ bandy-legged alien energy as he darts about looking for Cybermats. His striding authority (in, by this point, a much better striding coat than his initial Tweed) with Val (Lynda Barron) and the friends he rapidly makes at his job at the store. In Closing Time particularly, he’s more downbeat, from his maintained habit of kissing everyone in greeting or departure, twice, French-style, to the plateauing of his face in disappointment when he learns that Craig and Sophie didn’t name their first child “The Doctor”, to his child-like glee at demonstrating a remote-controlled helicopter to children, then getting to the heart of their experience by telling them their parents are boring. He’s both more grounded and more ostentatiously weird by comparison with the Really Very Ordinary Craig. The Eleventh Doctor with Craig Owens is different to the Eleventh Doctor with Amy and Rory Pond, or with River Song, or with Clara Oswald. But seriously, if that’s all you’re focusing on, you’re missing out on some diamond quality Matt Smith. Most people remember that it stars James Corden, which annoys them, and that it’s written by persona non grata Gareth Roberts, which annoys them for a rather more logical reason, and that the line “I blew them up with love” appears in it, which to many people is the absolute nadir of the Cybermen’s existence in Doctor Who. It will never be a story that people hold up as the best of the Matt Smith era, but Closing Time has a lot more to offer than most people remember. Or as much on his own as it gets when the Doctor’s around, and has his Noticing Face on.īecause, much as the Doctor wants to ignore it – and in Closing Time, there’s some enormously impressive Matt Smith acting as he really, truly TRIES to ignore it – something’s afoot… underfoot. But with Sophie away for the weekend, he has to deal with the hand-grenade unpredictability of a young child on his own. Bit of a dipstick when it comes to being a dad, but mostly, fine. They have a son now: Alfie, who shall be called Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All. The Doctor knows he’s going to his appointed death and destiny, and – for reasons that admittedly confuse a whole lot of Doctor Who fans – he goes to see Craig Owens, the man whose infamous lack of ambition led him to relative safety in The Lodger, played again by James Corden.Ĭraig and Sophie have moved on from the last time the Doctor saw them. The Doctor has just left Amy and Rory behind on Earth, Amy’s adoration for him finally quashed and replaced with something more even-handed and realistic after the events of God Complex – to this day, one of the finest Eleventh Doctor stories. Series 6 was probably the ‘Peak Moffatt’ point of the Matt Smith era – complicated, temporally convoluted, and with a sense of growing, impending darkness moving towards an impossible conclusion and any number of handy loopholes through which to crawl out of the deeper, more meaningful consequences of all the drama.Ĭlosing Time, in that run up to the end, functions very much as the in-drawn breath before the finale, a moment of relative calm before the whole universe goes totally tonto in The Wedding Of River Song. In either scenario, the operator must do so for the purpose of making a profit, which will be judged over a period of time that is hopefully longer than a downturn in commodity prices. The safer approach, however, may be to reduce continuous production volumes. In summary, it is likely that producing intermittently with no cessation of longer than the period described in the cessation of production clause would be permissible. If an operator temporarily halts or reduces production, it is critical that it do so for the purpose of making a profit and not merely for speculation. And, when a lease has a defined cessation of production clause, that period has been held to be the definitive period of permissible temporary cessation. While production is required to maintain an oil and gas lease beyond its primary term, a reasonable temporary cessation is permissible when there is no cessation of production clause. And, the operator should be prepared to show that it acted as a reasonable and prudent operator would have acted under similar circumstances.ĭuring times of low commodity prices operators often consider reducing or temporarily halting production to reduce losses. If challenged, a court should review profitability over a long term, not just during a few months of low prices. The Court stated that “there can be no limit as to time, whether it be days, weeks, or months, to be taken into consideration in determining the question of whether paying production from the lease has ceased.” Id at 483. The Texas Supreme Court held that an instruction limiting the jury to consider “fifteen months of slowed production” was in error, because it “did not allow the jury to consider the well’s return to profitability following that window.” Laddex at 484. One Texas Court considered 12 months and 21 months to be reasonable considering the facts of the case. The time period for determining whether a well has produced in paying quantities is “a reasonable period of time under the circumstances.” BP Am. The second prong broadly considers factors such as depletion of the reservoir, price of the produced product, relative profitableness of other wells in the area, operating and marketing costs, net profit, lease provisions, whether the lessee is holding the lease merely for speculative purposes, and whether there is a reasonable basis for the expectation of profitable returns. The first prong considers whether the entire income attributable to the working interest created by the original lease exceeds the operating and marketing expenses, which include taxes, overhead charges, labor, repairs, and depreciation on salvageable equipment, but not costs or expenses in connection with the original drilling of the well. And second, it looks to “whether or not under all the relevant circumstances a reasonably prudent operator would, for the purpose of making a profit and not merely for speculation, continue to operate a well in the manner in which the well in question was operated.” Clifton v. Whether a well has produced in paying quantities is determined in hindsight by considering a two pronged test that first looks to whether the well “pays a profit, even small, over operating expenses … though it may never repay its costs, and the enterprise as a whole may prove unprofitable.” Id. Therefore, in addition to actual production, a lessee must produce in paying quantities to maintain an oil and gas lease beyond its primary term. Texas and New Mexico Courts have held that “the terms ‘produced’ and ‘produced in paying quantities’ mean substantially the same thing.” Id. Oil and gas leases are typically for a certain term of years and then for “so long as oil or gas is produced from the land.” Maralex Res., Inc. This brief note discusses production in paying quantities, which is often the issue determining the need to invoke one or more lease savings clauses. We have previously discussed shut-in, force majeure, continuous drilling, cessation of production, and commencement of operations lease provisions, which are known as lease savings clauses. The cluck is a softer sound than the putt. Needless to say, you do not want to putt when you are calling. As you will read below, the putt is a warning call signaling danger to other turkeys. In the video below, you can hear this hen clucking and purring. The cluck can be heard in conjunction with purrs when a turkey is milling about at peace with the world. Unlike the yelp, it is less uniform and more erratic. Like the yelp, the cluck is also commonly used in a series. Hens will cluck to signal contentment or to let other turkeys know where she is. The cluck is another prominent hen turkey sound. Notice how the tone is deeper than most hen calls. Yelping is not exclusive to the female turkey. “Yelp,” “chuck,” and “shock” are just a few of the words commonly used to humanize the turkey vocabulary. There are a variety of words hunters will use to imitate a yelp with a mouth call. Hens will also use a loud series of assembly yelps to gather her flock together. This is in sharp contrast to the excited yelp you will hear in the spring as a hens answer gobbling toms. As a hen wakes up, she will make very soft, content tree yelps. The emotion of a yelp can vary quite a bit. Hens will also emit single yelps as well. These strings are usually very uniform and rhythmic. While hens typically yelp in three to seven-note strings, as you can hear in the video, they can create much longer strings. Hens commonly yelp to let other turkeys know her location. The yelp is the most common of the hen turkey sounds you will hear. There is a video or link to a video of each sound so you can hear and see for yourself a real turkey calling. This article covers seven different types of hen turkey sounds. Learning to distinguish the different calls, what they mean, and when to use them will make you a much better hunter. There are a variety of hen turkey sounds that all mean different things. I also can’t wait to get out into a turkey field and look for scat.To the untrained ear, it may sound like turkeys are just doing a bunch of squawking. It’s good to know that displaying for other males is part of their normal repertoire of behaviors. Males have a rudimentary internal sex organ that is believed to influence the shape of the scat.Īfter learning more about turkey mating behavior, I don’t feel as bad as I used to for my female-less male turkeys. Check that out next time you are in a field! This is due to differences in the internal anatomy of the genders. The males is j-shaped while the female’s is spiraled. One fascinating difference between the genders is the shape of their scat. Males also have a prominent beard - a tuft of modified feathers that can grow as long as 12 inches! Females sometimes have these, too, but they tend to be short and sparse. While similar in appearance the males are bigger and blockier and more colorful than the females with a metallic sheen to their feathers, whereas females are more slender with dull brown feathers. For now though, when you see a flock of turkeys in a field, it is most likely a mixed flock of mature birds. Once all the eggs are hatched, family groups will often combine forming large flocks of young turkeys along with two or more adult females. Males form all-male flocks while the females go off to lay the eggs and rear the young. Since learning this, whenever I can observe flocks of male turkeys during breeding season, I try to figure out who is going to be the dominant tom, who has the most colorful face, the longest snood, the most upright military posture.Ī male wild turkey uses his snood, the blue fleshy piece protruding down over its beak, as well as its wattles, the three red features hanging off its neck, to attract females during mating season.Īfter mating, the big male-female flocks disperse. Studies have shown that females prefer longer snoods. The red coupled with their striking blue faces signals to both their rivals and potential mates their health and vigor. When excited, their wattles (the fleshy protuberances that hang from their neck and throat) as well as their snoods (another fleshy protuberance located above the beak) swell as they become engorged with blood and turn bright red. These dominance displays involve not just strutting, but also gobbling, standing upright with tail feathers fanned, wings dragging on the ground, making non-vocal hums and chump sounds (Cornell Lab of Ornithology). The dominant tom gets the pick of the females. They strut at each other (and sometimes fight) to establish dominance. Wild turkey males use changes in facial color as well as strutting, gobbling and displaying their feathers to show their dominance and to attract females during mating season, which occurs in April and May in this area of New Hampshire and Maine.Īt the start of the breeding season, it is mostly males doing the strutting. |
